He's shown great chemistry with Crosby/Malkin and works with the #1 PP. Keeping a consistent offensive core is very smart to avoid what is happening in CHI.
Don't care about the insurance part of it or how much money it costs the owner

Cap part sure you get relief to replace him when he is out. But having overpaid injury proned players is risky especially if he can't get through a playoff run.

Over paying any player puts a team in similar risk as the Hawks are. Luckily for Pittsburgh Crosby and Malkin make a fair amount less than Toews and Kane and other teams are paying over 3 mil of Brassard and Kessel's contract. If the Pens are better off than the Hawks it isn't anything to do with this contract. But over paying Hornqvist can be costly when future players become free agents

This contract isn't good but keeping him keeps core together for this year and probably next too so when your winning cups it isn't the end of the world
