Hornquist has some bite to his game, scores all his goals from the places on the ice where goals get scored these days, and plays well with Crosby. The assumption that anyone can put up big numbers playing with Crosby is dubious - the Pens have stuck with certain players for long stretches with Crosby for a reason.
The Pens management aren't L.A. - they don't get sentimental and reward past performance. They've cut loose lots of supporting players when they feel they're past their due date (Orpik, Daley, etc.). They've also gotten strong contributions from older players - two years ago a 37-year-old Kunitz potted 17 goals for them, and a 39 year old Matt Cullen got 16.
So I think Pens management have a good feel for how a given player will produce in his 30s. I'd be willing to bet Hornquist remains a 20+ goal player for several more years (which is why I was hoping he'd make it to UFA so the Flames could sign him).
