How is 6 million a bad salary when we just finished giving Backlund 700K less a year for far less production?

Because the dip in production over the last two seasons comes after he was clearly propped up by Tavares.
So that roll of the dice is six million per season for FOUR more seasons after this where he's entering his 30s.
Between the health issue, the decline in production and his awful 2-way play, it's an awful risk tying up that much money with the players we'll be looking to sign over the next few seasons.
You can argue the player might not be declining (debatable) but the contract is awful and a huge risk.
