Those trades were both before the season started. Johanssen in the 15/16 season and Subban before the 16/17 seasons started.

What about how many points did the other teams have?
How many games played by other teams they were fighting against?
How were the other teams trending at the time?
That doesn't matter. This team is a single point out of the playoffs - if they have a shot to get in then you probably shouldn't blow it up.

After 62 games those teams had identical 31-22-9 records. They also had identical records after 51 games - so have played at the same pace over the last 11 games (25-18-8).

Digging into the deeper stats there were only 3 major differences between the teams. 5v5 Shooting Percentage (Nashville 0.5% better), Powerplay, PK. Everything else is similar. Flames are actually the better 5v5 team outside of their shooting percentage and if the PP is fixed now with the proper players that has a chance to catch up.

Flames

Regular Stats

GF:175 (15th)
GA: 179 (18th)
PP: 18.5 (23rd)
PK: 79.8 (17th)

5v5 Advanced Stats
CF%: 52.3% (4th)
High Danger Chances: 54.3% (4th)
Scoring Chances For: 52.4% (6th)
5V5 GF: 114 (15th)
Shooting Percentage: 7.24% (20th)
5V5 GA: 112 (13th)
Save Percentage: .9257 (13th)

Predators

Regular Stats
GF:181 (9th)
GA: 170 (17th)
PP: 20.5 (5th)
PK: 81.6 (13th)

5v5 Advanced Stats
CF%: 51.4% (6th)
High Danger Chances: 52.8% (7th)
Scoring Chances For: 50.8% (12th)
5V5 GF: 120 (9th)
Shooting Percentage: 7.75% (14th)
5V5 GA: 110 (13th)
Save Percentage: .9242 (12th)

But you're right we should totally blow this team up. They were nothing like Nashville last year.

Edit: Actually the real main difference this year might be that we have one more team in our division. That just happen to be first in the division. So unlike the Preds last year who snuck into 4th, the Flames sit 5th.
