With how slim the margins are between teams in this league, I think if the team can trade from a position of excess (defence) and address a position of need (scoring winger), you do it. I believe, especially with the addition of another scoring winger, that this team is absolutely one of the teams that could go the distance if things go right - and that's no different than any other team in the league. Things have to go right for you come playoff time, and all you can do is position yourselves as best as you can and then hope things click at the right time. We're there.

You don't subtract from the NHL roster right now, but you look at where things are going in the next few years.

Kylington, Andersson, Valimaki, and Fox all look poised to be solid, contributing top 4 NHL defencemen. I don't think there's room for all 4 of them in the foreseeable future.

Can we move one or two of them in a deal that addresses the team's biggest need for this year and beyond? If so, I think it's a wise move - specifically if it is for someone with speed and sniping ability (Hoffman?).

Absolutely do not spend on a rental, because if that's all you're looking for then Versteeg brings what a rental will bring. Make a move for something that will significantly help not only this year, but for years going forward.
