An emergency recall can only be made if you don't have enough players to ice a full roster (12 forwards, 6 defencemen, 2 goalies) because of injury, illness, or suspension. If you're not in that position, you can only use a regular recall. Because the Flames only have 2 goalies, Smith's injury automatically puts them in an emergency situation.

A different player is not required to be placed on the IR in order to make room for the recall in an emergency situation (if Smith was placed on IR, he would be required to miss a full week).

If it occurs after the trade deadline, an emergency recall doesn't count as one of the four recalls you're allowed after the deadline.

For a player who has previously cleared waivers, games played while on emergency recall don't count against the 30 day/10 game cumulative limit for requiring waivers again. However, if a player on emergency recall plays in 10 games during that recall, he will require waivers to be sent back.
