Gulutzan was asked on the morning show on 19 January about his goalies, and he said that they intended to keep Mike Smith's workload "in the sixties" (1:52:00). He also talked about increasing Rittich's starts down the stretch, and trying to play him in games following wins.
There is no good reason to think that the plan to start Rittich in Boston tomorrow was not already in place.
