The fact Rittich has this chance now to start a string of games, is a testament to the guy persevering through an otherwise very hopeless situation for someone clearly ready for the next stage.

Elliott was an upgrade on Hiller and did actually have a decent season, which came un-done when he became a sieve in the playoffs. Treliving then upgraded Elliott with getting Smith in a sweet deal with salary retained, which just seems hilarious right now given the state of the Coyotes. Many people didn’t think Smith was going to be this good, so Treliving deserves all the credit for getting a true #1 for very little.
I’m sure in hindsight many teams wish they could’ve had Smith for the same deal. Treliving has aggressively tried to solve the Flames goaltending issues without giving up prized assets and the goaltending has improved each season the last 3 years. It may of taken a few goalies to find the right one and he may not be a spring chicken anymore but goalies are weird and often the good ones are very hard to get. I’m very happy with Smith and I think Treliving deserves all the credit in the world for that trade.
