I for one think Bennett is going to ask for a trade this summer, so something is going to have to come back.
Getting a pick for him would be a 2nd at best. Hard pass.
Go the route of trading for another player that needs a "grass is greener" approach . Probably.
Trade him for a vet like Brasard.? I would pass unless there was some plan to trade Backlund for some young up coming top 6 forward.

Just trying to connect dots.
Dorian has stated that he wants young players back as much as he wants picks.
Backlund isn't re-signed as it stands now. Listening to the Treliving interview yesterday and coming away with the feeling that it is less sure than ever that he is returning. Not because both sides don't want it, but because there doesn't seem to be common ground on the terms of the deal. Dont know if that $$$ or length or a combination of the two.
Bennett likely has some real cache left with GM's who were part of the '14 draft. He was a guy every single one of them would have seen personally or had a very deep book on.
Brassard plays a heavy defensive game and can contribute on the offensive side as well. He has another year on his deal as well which is huge in the "cost control" part of things.
Something like this is a hockey deal as much as it is a cap deal. Something you dont find a lot of any longer. Maybe there needs to be something added from one side or the other to balance it, I dont know because i dont know how much either GM values either player..or to what degree they want to base a deal on. Those are the variables.
Im just getting the feeling that something happens here that is a lot bigger than I thought even a few days ago. The team needs a change as far as consistency goes, they need to get grittier/bigger IMO, and they obviously need to add at least a bit of offense.
Maybe it isnt Sam and maybe the chip is Brodie or Stone possibly, in which case there is more involved than a 1 for 1 swap for sure.
