2) this video also exemplies why we need the instigator rule. Hall makes a borderline hit. Burrows chases a skilled player around the ice, cross checking him and jabbing him in the face. Even without the kneeing, I don't want that type of 'self enforcement' in the NHL.
On item 2: I have no issues with people who want hockey to return to the "old" days where it was a war between two teams, because they enjoyed watching that more. However, to justify it as policing is ridiculous. This is the first (maybe second if you include the Marchand one) incident like this in a year. That is nothing compared to what the NHL used to be with enforcers or the instigator rule in the 80s or 90s. Bench clearing brawls were common place with 1 linesman and 2 referees trying to separate 10 or more fights, the liberties take there are nothing compared to this. Alternatively, do you think a nuclear deterrent like McGratton on the ice would make Burrows think twice? The reality is that a 10 or 20 game suspension(and the associated $$$ loss) affects these guys far more than the "fear" of a legitimate fighter going after them. A couple hundred thousand, may not be much of the lifetime earnings of Burrows, but every break and every lost cash flow is another step toward ending his career earlier with less money.
