It's not trading Brodie for Benn, it's trading Brodie for Pacioretty and then evening out the positions a bit.
But honestly, doubt Montreal makes that deal. Brodie's not a spring-chicken, if they are moving their best forward it's probably to signal a rebuild and the way Brodie has been playing, it just doesn't make sense to give up their best tradeable asset for him.

And to your point, it's likely not what Montreal even wants. They have to rebuild with younger players.
