Your job is to be ready in case of injury, but aside from that, the norm is for coaches to let players know they are going to be in as a matter of courtesy and so that they can play at their best.
Sarich didn't tell the story as it being detrimental to him, just that Hartley was being a dick and doing a power move. Which apparently he could be, depending on whether he liked you or not.
