The missus and I were on the Big Island beachside in 2011 when the Japanese Earthquake happened, creating a major Tsunami warning for the Hawaiian Islands. I remember sitting on the bed chilling, casually watching tv when the warning system kicked in. It took a few minutes to dawn on me that it was actually a serious impact item for ourselves and we’d have to vacate. In fact, a mandatory evacuation, enforced by police and hotel staff. We had about five hours notice though so we took some time to pack some necessaries, documents, etc, then got in the rental car and set out on a drive to find high ground. It was dark but we found a nice spot on the side of a highway - along with about 50 other cars - where we could watch all the lights going out on the shoreline below at about 3 am when the waves started. Then peed in the ditch like everyone else and tried to sleep for awhile. At 3 am, listening to the radio, we were watching below. . . . . and nothing happened. When daylight came round, a local grocery store was open so we used the bathroom facilities - like everyone else - and were allowed back into the hotel about 10 am. The bay at our hotel was emptying and refilling with a significant tide, in and out, roughly every 15 minutes. Kind of a fun adventure but I wouldn’t recommend trying to sleep in a Cavalier.
I'm assuming that you didn't have your dogs with you
