Not sure that means different faces, just means different tactics in different scenarios. Sounds like he was hard on his players behind closed doors, but would defend them out in public and to the media.
Doesn't mean what he did was right or wrong, but it likely means most of the things he did was with purpose vs. reacting emotionally. I think we often try to bucket players, coaches etc.. into way to general buckets. Player X goes out and acts like an ass when he's out at a club for example, must mean he's a locker room cancer. Not necessarily, could be the most supportive team mate in the world. Coach yells and screams about his team in an interview, must treat his guys like crap in the locker room.........not necessarily.
