Ideally, if they didn't get the onside kick, it would've been at the 45 yard line or further back to start the drive. You trust your defense to get the 3 and out, and keep them out of FG range, or a long distance one.
I think the call was a fair one since if they would have the advantage of timeouts and more time if they got the onside kick. Otherwise, they would get the ball back with the same amount of time.
