PHOENIX -- The Phoenix Coyotes pulled out an upset Sunday night against the Ottawa Senators to extend their winning streak to 4 games! Star RW Miroslav Satan had a shorthanded goal and 2 points to lead the team to victory. Nikolai Khabibulin also put up a wall and helped the Coyotes earn the win.
The win boosts the Desert Dogs to 11th in the league and 4th in the conference, excellent improvement for a team that had a slow start this year. Pierre Turgeon continues to light it up unexpectedly, he has 11 points and a +7 in 11 games, the numbers speak for themselves: this veteran is not done yet.
The much maligned Coyotes defense continues to improve with every game. Prior to the game the coaching staff decided to increase the role of Daniel Tjarnqvist in order to better balance the minutes played my each D man. Tjarnqvist now has spots on the 3rd ES line, 2nd pp unit, and 2nd pk unit.
On this night the Coyotes opened the scoring around 11 minutes into the first period when Turgeon recieved a beautiful cross ice pass from Briere and lifted the puck into the top of the net. The Desert Dogs scored the game winning goal at 18:24 of the 2nd period when the Senators defenseman pinched down from the point on the powerplay and Chris Therien of the Coyotes poked the puck past him to a speeding Miroslav Satan. Satan put on the afterburners and raced down the ice, faking the shot and the deking easily around the goalie, placing the puck in the bottom left corner of the net. The Senators immediately responded on the same powerplay, scoring only 22 seconds later... but the writing was on the wall. Only 2 minutes into the third period Erik Cole iced the game on a quick wrist shot from the high slot that found the top corner of the net.
That's all from Phoenix tonight.
