Johnny doesn’t get the call, so plays the puck away from everyone else, giving Monahan and Gio a chance to come back, so it’s not a 2 or 3 on 0. Gio actually tips the puck on the breakaway pass, just enough so that it can’t be recieved easily. Then Gio keeps skating hard so that he cuts off any chance of a deke. And because the Wild player was already in tight, he only had one option, drastically increasing the chance of Smith making the save.
After the blatant interference preventing Johnny from getting the puck, Johnny has the presence of mind to go get the puck (to beat out what would have been icing). Then the patience. And Dougie beat the wild player back into the play after they both came onto the ice.
