I doubt Backlund would sign a below market deal ahead of UFA to simply allow himself to be traded to a rebuilding team.
He might do such a deal with Calgary, as its home for him, but it will include no trade protection.

He may get slightly more as a UFA because players get overpaid as UFA’s but $5.5-$6m/yr is what he is worth.
