2017 saw the 2nd lowest number of officer fatalities in 58 years. Leading cause of death was traffic: 47 deaths. 44 officers died from gunshots.

Conversely police shot and killed 976 Americans in 2017 (so far, by Monday it should be 979).
In Canada, as far as I can tell only one police officer was shot and killed in the line of duty in 2017. Likewise, the best source for shooting deaths by police in Canada is suspect (Wikipedia) but it seems 4 Canadians were shot and killed by police officers in 2017.
