Let’s review the goaltending.

Year 1 comes in with Ramo signed for another year and goes out and signs Hiller to a reasonable 2 year deal. That tandem gets it done as a middle of the pack group and the Flames shock and make the playoffs winning a round.

Treliving enters that summer with plenty of rumors of a new goalie. Talbot, Jones, etc the Flames are mentioned in trade talks. After the coup that was the Hamilton deal Treliving decided to hold onto his remaining picks and doubles down on Ramo-Hiller.

The next season is a spectacular failure of goaltending and the Flames are no longer getting the bounces. Ramo battles injury and the Flames give Ortiz, Backstrom looks and itnso clear that a new tandem needs to be brought in.

The draft the buzz all day was Bishop being dealt to Calgary. One of the elite goalies of the past several years and what the cost was remains to be seen. Articles suggested Bishop thought a deal was done but what I suspect is the Flames pulled the deal when they realized Tkachuk was going to fall to them. Treliving pivots and trades one of the 3 2nd round picks for Brian Elliott a goalie that took his team to the third round, and had sparkling stats over the past 5 years. The question remained if he was a true number 1. Treliving gets insureance by signing soood backup 1b goalie Chad Johnson and not giving Ortio the job.

We all know last season had both goalies getting extremely hot and frigidly cold. Good enough to get the Flames to the playoffs but Elliott completely melts down and the Flames walk away. Rumors of an Elliott extension came out in the early part of the season. Treliving smartly moves on.

This summer he is able to bring in Mike Smith who is a proven number 1. He brings in Eddie Lack for basically nothing for backup insurance. Smith has been everything we can ask for and the cost was a NCAA prospect and a 3rd that hopefully becomes a 2nd (condition of making the playoffs). In the meantime Rittich has emerged as a legit backup and the Flames were able to cut bait with Lack. Gillies and Parsons in the farm and no lobg term commitment to any goalie.

The fact you think that a team at the beginning of a scorched earth rebuild and made the playoffs twice should have the GM fired because he has replaced the goalies? Luckily he didn’t get locked into the deal with Bishop, or sign Elliott to an extension. Smith only has 2 years on his deal so while the goalie situation hasn’t been perfect it is far from a reason he should be fired and never work in the league again.

An over the top take on your part
