Conditions placed on picks to protect a team from losing key draft picks in SNAFU scenarios.
Such as:
Top 3 protection (Team wins a lottery)
Top 10 Protection (Team finishes bottom 10)
Top 16 Protection (Team Misses Playoffs)
In scenarios like this, the picks are deferred to later years.
It's how you avoid end up trading both Tyler Seguin and Dougie Hamilton away for just Phil Kessel. But this management from the GM right up to our POHO is too arrogant to value the potential of first round draft picks.
