Fair enough but it would sure be a lot cooler if he had 6.5 years left.
It all ties into the discussion on Backlund and should the Flames pay him big money and term that goes beyond the timeframe where they need to re-sign Monahan and Gaudreau?
Tkachuk, Bennett, Hamilton, Brodie will all be expecting raises in the same tune frame. Tkachuk, Bennett, Hamilton absolutely should be kept long term due to age.
It would be awesome for Backlund to sign a 5 year deal so it aligns with the Monahan extension. Theoretically if the Flames keep Johnny they can use the cap coming from Gio expiring to sign Johnny. Perhaps the same with Backlund and Monahan. If the Flames Go 6-7 years with Backs north of $5M it could hurt their ability to keep the team together.
