The Flames couldn't have ever aspect of the contract in their favour. They eventually gave in on the length, Johnny lowered the AAV.

Flames should have paid Johnny the $7.5M he wanted for the 8 years. It was rumored that is what he wanted. Even if they paid him $8M that would have been a steal. The Oilers once again ruined second contracts paying Draisaitl $8.5M per season. I won’t rip the McDavid deal because every team does that co tract but never te less that deal impacts other young players coming up.
I was not a fan of the Johnny deal from day 1 entirely due to the 6 year term. That is partially due to the fact I don’t think he will stay in Calgary after this contract and he will be considered quite underpaid and will want top dollar when he controls his destiny. The flames had all the leverage on that negotiation and used it.
