I look at the kamikaze light speed maneuver as only possible due to the circumstances.

All firepower was aiming and focused on the transports, they even made sure to have Hux purposefully say ignore the cruiser. If they had fired on the cruiser there was no way it could have gotten into position to ram the fleet in time before it was destroyed.

The same goes for the smaller ships. They were running just at the end of range, had they tried to slow in order to turn and aim at the fleet then engage hyperdrive again they would have been destroyed.

Why it hasn't been used in the past is a bit of a mystery.
