Think of the play this way:
Had the play been the same, but a patriot had been touching James as he had a knee down, it would have been a catch as the play would have ended there.
But he's not touched, so he turns into the end zone and breaks the plane.
He literally cannot extend the ball towards the end zone if he doesn't already have possession.

Being touched or not is irrelevant. He still has to complete the process of a catch. He's not a runner down by contact.
I've seen 'non-catches' where the receiver had possession, both feet down and then defender punched the ball out.
