I remember leading up, there was a lot of debate over Barkov vs. Monahan vs. Lindholm with some hoping that Drouin would fall and others wanting Nichushkin, but only the latter plus Monahan was actually available at our position. I think if you followed the consensus at the time, Monahan was pretty much the no-brainer slam dunk pick.
It's kinda nice that the guy we got ended up being exactly what we needed, though I wouldn't balk at Barkov either.

I LOVE Monahan but there are two players I would still take over him today - Barkov and McKinnon (if we are talking about potential, what they have done so far - Monahan.). Barkov doesn't have the goalscoring ability of Monahan (in fact, nobody from this draft class does) but he's a superior playmaker and much,much better defensively. The guy's a future 60+ point Selke winner.
This is not a knock on Monahan at all, Barkov is just that damn good. Looking at the draft class (just forwards), Barkov and Monahan are clearly above the rest.
