So, I am not huge on advanced stats. But I found this to be quite interesting after last nights game. How do we dominate the game like we did and lose 5-2? We had plenty of chances (30 of them) and couldn't score enough to win. This was simply unlucky last night when it came to offense.
And I also found this to be very interesting. On the defensive side of things, all the goals were scored in the goal crease, basically and all high danger chances were right in front of the net. Why? Why aren't our guys clearing that space? Why are we letting them just walk to the most dangerous area of the ice? I don't get it. We shouldn't have lost this game, but you can see from the heat map that we were playing on the perimeter and they weren't. Simple as that. They were on a 10 game losing streak, they crashed the net and got to the net as often as possible, we are soft and choose the perimeter. Time for a new tactic. Benny, Ferland, Tkachuk need to get in the faces of the goalies more often, get to the net. Snow shower the goalies as often as you can, be aHoles out there. This soft play is hard to watch. I was late getting home and missed the start of the 2nd, but it went from 1-1 to 4-1 so quickly, I didn't both watching the rest of the game. It is disheartening. I hope the coaches aren't showing these kinds of stats to the guys and telling them that they played well enough to win, something is still missing and it this isn't on Mike Smith.
