As a coach, you call that timeout to let your players know your head is still in the game, you still feel like and think you can win, you have maybe a small breakout pattern or a dzone coverage drawn up on your board just so the boys have something hockey to focus on other than how badly they're getting whipped... etc, etc.
But most importantly, you need to show that bit of leadership. It sets the tone for your players - it's like pushing a big red reset button on the momentum and emotional curves of your team. People complaining about him never calling a timeout are not doing so because they think he will send out the perfect line or draw up the perfect play, they want him to spend a minute to talk to the boys who go into emotional wreck mode if things go badly. Which has particularly been the case for this entire homestand.
