I think it is pretty clear that management thinks the team can and should compete this year. You do not give up your 1st and 2nd in a deep 2018 draft so that you can compete in 2021 when those picks will be playing on your team.

I'm led to believe Hamonic really wants to play in western Canada - so as long as things are going well here - he's not leaving after 3 years. Yes, Tkachuk is going to cost money during the championship years - all the more reason why the most important decisions to be made in the next couple seasons is to have a 3rd and 4th line that performs on the cheap. That's the current model for success around the NHL, and we are aiming for it.
