The fact is Versteeg is a vet, and guys like Klimchuk and Mangiapane are competing for his job. Mangiapane especially is playing well in the A, so he 100% deserves a first look.
Now that Versteeg is injured, Mangiapane should be recalled and given the opportunity to stick around. If he's not performing to NHL standards though, and there is no one else competing for that job, then what do you do? It's good to have a vet under contract who you know can play NHL minutes fill in the gap until the AHLer out performs him.
I'm not convinced Mangiapane's skills will translate to the NHL.
