regarding point 2, if we look at the west, it's really wide open. When you consider that the ducks/sharks are definitely down a notch, and the potential for vegas to perhaps fall out of a spot, the flames could easily be setup for home ice against a decent first round matchup.
If the flames can figure out how to play defense, i could definitely see them surge into the division lead discussion, at which point management will have to at least consider taking part in the deadline arms race. I hate giving up assets to do so, but it really wouldn't shock me if it happens.
