So apparently the city is putting the fieldhouse into the Olympic bid and they are adding an ice rink to the middle of the field.

A group advocating for a new fieldhouse for Calgary is concerned that the city is linking construction of the project to a possible Olympic Bid.

Jason Zaran, chair of the Calgary Multisport Fieldhouse Society, said he’d had some previous indication that construction of the fieldhouse could get lumped in with Olympic plans.

He also had hints that the new plans might include an ice rink in the middle of the 400 metre track.

“It was certainly not part of the fieldhouse plans we’d been working on with the City of Calgary to happen right away," he said.

At a council presentation on Monday, the city’s recreation director, Kyle Ripley, accidentally revealed some preliminary estimates about how much would be needed to build or refurbish sports facilities for the potential hosting of a 2026 Olympic games.

The estimate for a fieldhouse with an ice plant was $272 million. The city also estimates a fieldhouse without ice, and without Olympic support, would cost $255 million.

Zaran said the fieldhouse under its current design with no ice surface would be cheaper.
