There's a huge swath of buyers and readers who are pulling away from reading monthly serialized releases. I don't know how long publishers will continue to publish comics this way, but I could see it coming to a stop sometime in my lifetime. It will be a seismic shift in the industry when it does happen - from how stories are pitched, to how they're paced, to how creators are paid for them, for how publishers schedule releases, everything. I have no idea how it will sort out, but I imagine it's going to be rather messy while it does so.
