I was very surprised with Hathaway in the pre-season. It was eerily similar to that of Stajan years ago when he was replaced by Horak.
In my opinion, the 4th line spot was Hathaway's to lose, and that is what he did. I did think that Glass looked good in the pre-season, but as long as Hathaway looked decent, he should have made the team. He didn't. Glass looked quite a bit better.
I am glad that Hathaway is finding success in the AHL, and now with signing Jagr and Jankowski making the jump, he has to patiently wait for a trade or a sudden rash of injuries to get some time. I think this will serve him as a good reminder to not take a single thing for granted. It better serve notice to the rest of the prospects as well - you better come in and play as hard as you can all the time when given the opportunity, or you may not get one for a very long time - if at all.
