As for the piling on, this is where a no thanks button could be useful. Instead of someone like me trying to articulate a opposite opinion and failing miserably, I could just hit the no thanks button. But that in itself could be a form of piling on as well...

This is an interesting idea eliminating the need to pile on but instead just click dislike. A sort of barometer, or gauge for posters to see that the majority might not approve of a certain behavior. In addition it could free up mods time by the simple fact that it is somewhat self moderating. Taken a step further mods could have access to the numbers of dislikes attributed to certain posters allowing them to review single, or accumulative posts leading to an appropriate course of action.
Nice to have a sports forum where the owner and mods care about the customer experience.
