Boardwalk Empire suffered the same fate as so many shows: instead of building towards an ending, they tried to quickly wrap everything up in a season. As the cherry on top, they tried to bring the story back to the beginning in the final scenes...but it just didn't make enough sense storywise.
You really have to appreciate when a series ends on a high note.
