I have also noticed a perplexing inconsistency between what counts as scoring chances and what seems to me should count. Is there a breakdown in the numbers you are using as to what is and is not a "scoring chance"?

I would agree with Eric Francis in the broadcast who said that the Flames are "average" in terms of team speed. But I would also suggest that they seem to be well constructed to counter and beat very fast teams. It will be interesting to see as the season progresses, and they may yet continue to struggle with larger, "heavier" teams (i.e. the Blues), if the Flames can continue to neutralize speed this effectively this should make them pretty successful this year.
I think the biggest early season issue was the gap between the forwards and the defenseman. This can happen for two reasons ... 1) lazy forwards 2) forwards that are too jacked and anticipate what hasn't happened yet. I think even Jagr spoke to it before he got hurt. Easy to fix on hard working teams (last three years), harder to fix on stubborn teams (Iginla's last few years).

the scoring chance thing ...

many sites have maps that show you "scoring chances", but that metric is far too liberal for my liking. I prefer HDCF which suggests a high danger shot attempt and is a much tighter metric.

For example the Flames last night had 64 shot attempts in all situations, 35 "Scoring chances" which is far too high, and then 10 HDCF. Shot attempts and Scoring chances are mapped, but you can't see what the 1 second period HDCF isn't described.
