While I agree something needs to be done, screaming "GUN CONTROL" simplifies a ridiculously complex situation, again, in a country where guns are part of daily life and a basic right of citizens. Like I said, it is beyond complex and it is a situation that isn't as easy as "BOO NRA - BAN GUNS" like many make it out to be.

I'm sure there are plenty of cases where you could point to the loopholes (gun show, background check, resale) where there has been evil perpetrated. But I would just point to the trend of Van/Truck attacks lately and emphasize that evil will find a way to do evil, regardless of laws. We could institute rigorous background checks for Home Depot truck rentals, which may have prevented the NYC truck attack, but the guy would have found another way.
No one is saying Japan hasn't had incidents. It has. it has has mass killings with knives and trucks, sarin gas...banning guns makes it more difficult to have a mass killing. Yeah, you can't stop evil, but you can make it more difficult.

the issue is that 'common sense' controls are conflated with some crazy notion of a loss of liberty... the US does have controls. One can't own automatic weapons, grenades, rocket launchers for example...there doesn't seem to be an issue about that is there?

Assault weapons were banned once upon a time during the Clinton Administration and the sun still came up... now the gun manufacturers didn't make 500-1200$ for each weapon that was sold, but i didn't see anyone's Liberty adversely affected.

just wait for Silencers to be legalized for yet another revenue stream for the gun lobby...

but thoughts and prayers everyone, thoughts and prayers.
