Russia is not the USSR and I'm talking about national influence on a global scale. Yes, internal repression was ugly particularly under Stalin and the iron curtain. Repression and suppression of democracy and dissent is also despicable under Putin. That's why I think Ovechkin is a dolt.
But in terms of the global capitalist order, the US generally does not hold any moral high ground. They have propped up many corrupt repressive regimes usually with at least an ostensible logistical objective but mostly to turn a buck, democracy and human rights be damned. The Saudis are a prime example in the current day.
