I wonder if Snoke pretended to have been a Jedi in hiding, gained Luke's trust, and began trying to corrupt the students.

I guess though that the Force ghosts of Anakin/Obi-Wan/Yoda would have warned Luke, unless they figured their jobs were done and wandered off into the Jedi afterlife.
