My anecdote - when we were in France and the Netherlands we bought cheap beer and wine from the grocery stores and drank it out. Drinking at a restaurant was a bit of a premium. So, I was generalizing that everybody would be like me and my wife. Although, I have to say it always felt a bit awkward drinking in public, but in the future I would bring wine glasses to drink wine and not from the bottle.
