Sports is entertainment and a break from the day to day reality for fans and they don't want politics mixed in. The players can tweet whatever they want or kneel during anthems on their own time but if their employee expects them to stand during the anthem they should respect that just as our employers expect you and me to adhere to their dress and conduct policy.
Then fire them if you don't like it.

EDIT: It's weird that the same people who bitch about the players making political statements during their "work time" don't seem to have a problem with players thanking God, talking about religion or kneeling to pray when on TV.
