You can actually use car audio amps. They are basically the same principle has the plate amp on your powered subwoofer.
If you want the home audio look, then I recommend used Parasound amps. HCA1000, HCA1200. HCA806 for a six channel amp.
If you can find them, Audiosource offers good bang for the buck. Something like this:

You can even use vintage integrated amplifiers/receivers as long as they have pre-in inputs.
