The Flames could draw a lot more penalties with an agressive strategy using the middle of the ice. They were nearly shut out again. Also, playing your top line with the third d pairing is a bad idea, but its a thing.
When the Flames went on a good run last year, management said they "dumbed down" the system. Which means they used less of that system to win. It seems like the individual skill is neutered in favor of structure, the lines/pairings reflect this.
