Hindsight is pointless, he is who the Flames picked. More important is foresight - what is his realistic trajectory, what role/position will he play with in the future makeup of the team, what impact does that have on decisions regarding Backlund and Jankowski, etc.
Unfortunately he is not trending where we all hoped he would so far. Maybe he doesn’t end up as 2C, then resigning Backlund is (even more of a) priority. Maybe he doesn’t fit at C, so start prepping Jankowski. Maybe he needs a change of scenery. I’m not saying any of those are true, just the longer he goes not living up to expectations the more questions need to be asked.
Too soon? Absolutely! We also don’t know what the team’s expectations are for him. But one hope by the end of the season we have a pretty good idea of what we have here.
