I just ran some similar math. The average NHL game last year had 6 powerplays so I reduced the game to 48 minutes and ran 40 second shifts totally 72 shifts or 24 per period.
Seems about right.
Then I ran the lines through flat and the same with the defense pairings.
2 shifts per period you get the bottom line and the bottom pairing for a total of 6 out of 72 or 8.3%.
I'm not even advocating skipping all of these instances, but after your powerplay laid a turd with four minutes and the Kings building momentum and only 5 minutes from an intermission?
That was time to look down the bench and say "not now"
