Good article on what its like to quit smoking
Now 44, Triano was indeed a hard-core smoker, taking her first puff at age eight after sneaking one of older brother's cigars.
"I just thought that the canisters (the cigars came in) were really cool, so I decided to hang out in the bathroom one day when everybody was out. And I smoked the entire stogie from stem to stern, standing over the toilet in the basement."
"I was buzzed to high heaven but not sick . . . I loved it."
From that point on, Triano would occasionally sneak one of her mom's Export As. After her mother's death from ovarian cancer when Triano was 10, she started buying her own smokes. By 12, she was up to a pack a day without her father's knowledge.
Two years later, he caught her puffing away and thought she had just started. He told her to stop until she was at least 18. "He had no idea that by this time it was a habit," she recalls, "and I wasn't about to give it up."
Butt out!
