Nothing gratuitous about that Joi ad at all, sure.

"Adults can handle it" is just a really silly argument. I can "handle" way, way more nudity. (I mean, I'm Finnish. I've probably seen all my friends naked, male and female. Not to mention all the porn)

I don't know, maybe it's because I've watched a ton of old movies lately (early eighties and earlier) and the full (original) Twin Peaks, but its really started to stick out just how much needless female nudity or semi-nudity there is on film and TV. Sure there's a few more beefcakes too than there used to be, but it's so rare in comparison it might as well not exist.

And yeah, it kind of jumps out in this film when it's really the only aesthetic change they made for this film.
