There really isn't a way to game plan McDavid that doesn't leave you flat footed other than double coverage. Collapse behind the blue line and let him in so you can stay in front of him? Nope. Wait until he hits the neutral zone and try to stay with him as he enters? Nope.
Keep two guys on him exposing Draisaitl or Maroon or whoever? Might be the only way. But chances are he just leaves two of your players in the dust or they pull a Versteeg/Brouwer and run into each other.
