I disagree. The two features that characterize an assault rifle are: 1) long barrel; and 2) detachable, high capacity magazine. The ability to change magazines quickly is what is required to conduct military-style assaults.
You can take away a gun’s folding stock, pistol grip, bayonet mount, flash suppressor, select fire mode, and use a nice wood finish, and it is still an assault rifle if it can accept a high capacity magazine.
